A High Tower

Do we put our confidence in temporary, physical things?

Transcript

[Steve Myers] We know we live in a broken world. It's complicated. It's just become more and more evident in recent times. There's a beautiful passage that's in the proverbs that can help give us hope. In Proverbs 18:10, it reminds us the name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous run to it and are safe. So it shows where our refuge is. It shows where we can have hope, and we can trust God. But it also goes on then in verse 11, and it says the rich man's wealth is his strong city. And like a high wall, in his own esteem.

In other words, that man, that man that trusts in his wealth, in his money, they try to put their confidence in that, and where does that lead you? And I think it makes such an interesting point. Those who trust in God have confidence. They can have safety in God. But if you trust in your wealth, you have this unscalable wall. You can't get over that wall. Godly people have God as a strong tower. If money is your wall, you're not gonna be able to get over it. If trusting in your job is what you really count on, that's not something you can rely on. What is your unscalable wall? That's really what this proverb is asking us. Is it your health? Everything's great, but that's what we trust in? Do we put our confidence in our homes and our cars and our money? We see that's going to lead to problems.

Ultimately, the only hope we have, the only confidence we can have, is in the strong tower of our awesome God. So always take that time to run to that high tower that is our great God. And we can take that to the bank. Righteousness, it says, the righteous run to it, and ultimately, they are safe.

That's BT Daily. We'll see you next time.
