On Monday Polish foreign minister Radek Sikorski nearly begged Germany to save Europe.
The Financial Times reports Germany is the only country in Europe that can act to save the eurozone and the wider European Union from “a crisis of apocalyptic proportions.” Sikorski went on to say,"'I will probably be the first Polish foreign minister in history to say so, but here it is: I fear German power less than I am beginning to fear German inactivity." An amazing understatement!
What a change. This is the same country, Poland, that was overrun by the Wehrmacht in September 1939, starting World War II. The same country that has been carved and eaten by Prussian ambition for more than a century. The same nation that has been a buffer between the two most historically belligerent nations in Europe: Russia and Germany. It is a serious situation in Europe when you read something like this.
Not only does he call Germany Europe's "indispensable nation," he also challenged Great Britain to become a full partner with the EU. Britain has not joined the monetary union, while being a member of the greater EU. Talk like this could isolate Great Britain from the continent should a new form of union take place.
Europe is going through a major crisis that no one seems to know how to manage. So far every effort by leaders to manage the economic crisis of member states has not worked to settle the waters. Instead, the waves only seem to grow bigger. Something different will rise out of this scene. Something far different than what is currently in place. And the world will be astounded.
To see a Polish official make such a statement about Germany and Europe shows a level of naiveté not seen for nearly a hundred years.
