New England Congregations Organize 50's Dance

On Feb. 1, the Southern New Hampshire and Worcester, Massachusetts congregations combined for services followed by a potluck and 50’s dance social.

The dance organizers made the event like the popular bandstand dance TV shows of the 50’s era. They called it “The New England Bandstand” on TV Station WLBS (Worcester Londonderry Broadcasting Service). The evening featured original, big screen music videos of Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Elvis and Chuck Berry. Dancers bopped to the music of the era, including “Splish Splash” and “The Bunny Hop.” They learned a 6-count line dance from the 50’s called “The Madison.” Costumes ranged from the “Greaser” look with slicked hair, white T’s and jeans to a soda fountain couple in red apron and pinstripe dress. The kids loved aiming a prop retro video camera at the “hip” dancers. A soda fountain served sundaes with chocolate, crumbled cookies, frozen strawberries, caramel and sprinkles. It was a wonderful mid-winter social, and everyone had a fun evening!
