Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment

The Day of Atonement is a pivotal part of the plan of God. As such, there are a number of aspects that a person could address that are integral to the meaning of the Day. One of those important aspects, the Mercy of God, is addressed in one of books of the minor prophets that is traditionally read during the afternoon haftorah on Yom Kippur... the book of Jonah. The themes of the book parallel the themes of the Day of Atonement and through it God shows Jonah--and us--that mercy triumphs over judgment.
