Will America Be Great Again?

The remedy to America’s decline is not a new political leader or other human-formed solution. Learn the real answer.

[Darris McNeely] The world’s most powerful nation, the United States of America, is facing a time of great stress—but also of great opportunity. Growing debt and an uncertain economy, combined with credible terror threats, are creating fear and uncertainty. And, there are cultural changes occurring that bewilder many. And for the first time in almost a century, other nations are challenging America’s leading role in the world.

However, this moment presents a chance and a unique opportunity for an urgent message of warning and hope to be given to those who will hear and understand. It is a time for you, even if no one else will hear, to awaken from slumber and understand a timeless message from God’s Word. It is not too late for you to take steps to change your life and realize God’s great purpose for life—even as we see our nation's crumbling around us.

Join us on Beyond Today as we look at the question: “Will America Be Great Again?”

[Announcer] Join our host Darris McNeely and his guests as they help you understand your future on Beyond Today!

[Darris] Look around at today’s world. Major events are creating a period of change and uncertainty. Something is happening in America. There is a critical “leadership vacuum” that is exposing deeper spiritual issues. It is a crisis draining the hope and the confidence of the nation. Many of us are worried the nation is in a decline and that we might not see a recovery in our lifetime. And, the decline has far-reaching effects upon America’s allies and brothers in the Western world—in places like Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Like you, I am watching and hearing and share a growing concern. Like you, my future is impacted by the stability of our nation.

What does this mean? What can you do?

Let me explain the fear and anger people have through a composite story of a typical couple looking for hope and answers to what we all face. Like many others they hope the solution will come from a political leader.

Let’s look at James and Terri, a middle class couple in their mid-forties. James and Terri were high school sweethearts who married soon after high school graduation. They did not attend college—school just wasn’t their thing. They wanted to get on with life. Twenty-five years ago the American economy was very strong: factories were hiring; the pay was good. Today they live in a rural America on a very small piece of land that they had to scrimp and save to buy. On this land, they built a modest home where they raised three children. Their oldest child, a girl, is a single parent still living at home. So, Terri and James are helping raise their grandson. Their second child is about to graduate from high school and the youngest is in middle school.

James holds a job in a factory doing work dependent on foreign contracts. But he worries the factory will close and the jobs will go to another country. Terri, she works part time at a daycare center and supplements this work as a weekend cashier at a quick mart—a small grocery store that sells gas. Like many today, they consider themselves religious but don’t regularly attend church. Life is too busy for God and the Bible although they know He’s out there somewhere and religion is for special occasions like Easter or Christmas. They have a “live and let live” approach to social issues like abortion or same sex marriage.

This family is barely holding on to what is known as a “middle class lifestyle.” They fear immigrants, they fear terrorists and they fear the future. They see America as having been built by “people like them” and now others want to take it all away. And when a straight-talking politician comes along and promises to stop the slide and return the glory of America, to make the nation great again, James and Terri are ready to listen. They have hope that this time a savior has risen who will restore glory and order to America, its neighbors, and the larger world.

James and Terri are part of a new class of people in our society that they are calling “throwaway people.” Hard working, sincere people who either can’t find work or they are underemployed and in danger of being put on the street as homeless.

Many voices say we are near the point of no return. For months I have been watching candidates for the American presidency stand on a national stage shouting, “America no longer wins,” or “America is losing,” and “America is facing the growing threat of Islamic terrorism.” These statements have found a big audience. People know something is wrong. Even the biggest most positive observers of the national and world scene have begun to rethink this question. The signs of decline have become too strong to ignore. They correctly ask, “Has the nation been set on a course for decline”?

Many Americans are concerned about the direction of the nation on many fronts. There is a fear and anger working at many levels today. This entire election cycle has been turned upside down. Conventional leadership based on character and integrity seems lost and hard to discern within the messages. Visionary leaders of yester-year, once able to rally the nation behind messages of hope and meaning, are just not on the stage.

And this reflects significantly deeper problems that are spiritual in nature. By virtue of America’s historic and prophetic world role, this then becomes a larger problem for the world.

Fear is driving much of the public discussion in not only America but other parts of the world. There is the fear of Islamic terrorist attacks coming to the nearest shopping mall or the nearest large sports event. There is the fear of recession, of economic collapse. And there is the fear among many in the American middle class that their world is threatened and the future uncertain. So, they look to politicians to provide policies of hope. Unfortunately, they elect these politicians only to be disappointed after their terms in office.

But our composite couple, James and Terri, and many others like them, will be disappointed, again. How about you? The promises of politicians, however well-meaning and sincere, will fall short of restoring America’s greatness.

I can tell you here, right now, the solution will not be found in any political leader we see on the stage. That one lesson should be clear for any who are concerned and deeply care about America and the well-being of mankind as a whole. The state, the government, the humanly devised solution, will never be the ultimate solution. Can you understand that point? It will take a spiritual intervention in the hearts and minds of our population. That is our sure hope.

America and the English-speaking nations have entered a time where the words of the biblical prophets apply more than ever. We have entered a time when the nations are being shaken by God. A different world order will emerge. Now is the time for James and Terri and all of us who sense something is wrong to look for answers and solutions beyond the tired promises of politicians, governments and empty religious traditions. It’s a time to look to God and to understand the cause of our problems.

Let’s step back. Let’s take a look at a few trouble spots in the world. Let’s examine what expert observers say about America’s relationship with the nations. It can give context to the question about America’s “greatness.”

Because of its size and wealth the United States has been the world’s sole superpower for the past few decades. Its military and economy are the biggest and strongest in the world. For good or bad it has acted as the world’s policeman in recent years. America led two coalitions into the Middle East to deal with anarchy. It has attempted to instill a democracy to nations like Iraq and Afghanistan. America’s men and women bled and died in places like Fallujah fighting to give a better life to the Arab peoples. We have even lost a dedicated American Ambassador, Christopher Stevens, when terrorists attacked his office in Libya in 2012.

War, genocide and the inhumane acts of evil repeatedly rise to plague our world. This confirms the biblical teaching that human nature apart from the Spirit of God is “desperately wicked” (Jeremiah 17:9). Christ warned that war and the ever-present threat of conflict would be a feature of life right up until His appearing to restore His Kingdom to this earth. But in today’s political discussions and brokering between nations, this biblical worldview is never factored into the international relations strategy of today’s world leaders. Bible prophecy and history show the relentless opposition of powerful, spiritual forces in constant action against God’s purpose. History is a record of God fulfilling His purpose among the nations. Satan has also used the nations to try and advance his plan—to oppose God at every turn. And we are seeing that play out in today’s headlines. It’s time you understood the true meaning behind the events that are making news today. It’s time that you sat up and take notice.

America may have armed itself materially and militarily, but it has failed to arm itself spiritually. America is spiritually and morally blind because of its national sins. Because of this it has also entered this “jungle” without the guiding hand of God.

Iran, Syria and the Middle East may seem like irrelevant places to you, but they’re really not. What does it mean to your life right now? Understanding what is happening in today’s world is important to knowing what God is doing with humankind. We’ll return to our question, “Will America Be Great Again?” in a moment, but first let me tell you about our free Bible study aid offer today.

So, will America ever be great again?

The answer to this question is spiritual. It will require us to examine the bigger question of “what has made America”—and for that matter Canada, Australia, Great Britain and all the English-speaking peoples of the world—“great”? The answer is not what you expect. The answer will not be found in any political candidate now or in the future. The answer will only be found in each of us turning to God in a deep, heartfelt repentance. And if your neighbors and the rest of the nation do not join you in repentance...then in the words of the prophet, you will at least save your soul” (Ezekiel 33:9).

For generations, America has placed on its currency the slogan, “In God we Trust.” Now is the time for us to take that slogan seriously and look to God’s Word to understand how America could get itself out of the problems it faces.

Let’s look at the prophet Isaiah. God sent this prophet to another nation who once trusted in Him, but now no longer did. Israel’s spiritual condition mirrors ours today. The message of Isaiah fits us exactly.

Notice how the prophet begins in his first chapter. “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth! For the LORD has spoken: ‘I have nourished and brought up children, And they have rebelled against Me; The ox knows its owner And the donkey its master’s crib; But Israel does not know, My people do not consider’” (Isaiah 1:2-3).

God says a people who once knew and acknowledged Him had forgotten what He once did for them. Ancient Israel literally turned their backs and ignored plain teaching and warning that would have caused them to return to God.

Likewise today, America and the English-speaking nations have forgotten who made them great. Our nations have created the greatest expansion of wealth in the history of the world. We did this because the God of Abraham was faithful in His promise to bless that patriarch’s descendants in the modern age. America, Britain, Australia and many other nations they touched are those people. Sadly, we don’t know this. As Isaiah said, “we do not consider.” Because we do not know this, we have turned to false religion, godlessness and moral sin.

America cannot be replicated in this world. If it could, it would have already happened through all the foreign aid, intervention and nation building. There is only one America. God did place this land and its people here for a divine purpose. This fact was long recognized long ago by our founders. They recognized this land seemed to be prepared and sheltered from history until it was God’s time to give it to people whose time on the world stage would come.

God guides the destiny of nations. God determines when a people, a nation, an empire will rise in the world. The apostle Paul spoke this truth while standing in the city of Athens when he said God, “has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings” (Acts 17:26). God determined the time America, Great Britain and the English-speaking nations would rise and become what the British author, Andrew Roberts describes as the “most decent, honest, generous, fair-minded and self-sacrificing...” peoples the world has ever known.

These nations grew large and great and free because the God of heaven made a promise long ago to a man named Abraham. God has fulfilled that promise in history and because He has, He will fulfill the spiritual promise of eternal salvation to all peoples.

If we then are living through the unraveling of America’s time of greatness, then now is a time, a moment of opportunity to acknowledge God and turn to Him with a changed heart. Now is a time for all the James’ and Terris’ to understand this missing dimension. Now is the time for all to understand that America has been great because God gave the wealth and the power and the blessing. Now is the time for you to understand America can only return to greatness through the path of a biblical repentance in the order and magnitude spoken by the prophet Isaiah. And if no one else repents, then God calls on you and me to sigh and cry for the nation and change our lives and ask for God’s mercy.

Alas, sinful nation, A people laden with iniquity, A brood of evildoers, Children who are corrupters! They have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked to anger the Holy One of Israel, they have turned away backward” (Isaiah 1:4).

Sin is not a popular word. A modern mind does not want to consider that sin, the transgression of God’s law, could be the cause of so many problems. Sin is a big problem and it’s a word that has disappeared from our vocabulary. We cover up great moral problems impacting families and society by using language that softens and hides the impact of personal sin.

The next prophetic passage in Isaiah speaks louder than almost any other Bible passage to describe the national condition of a nation that has known the greatness of America. Through the timeless words of a prophet from another time, God cries out to us today, “Why should you be stricken again? You will revolt more and more. The whole head is sick, And the whole heart faints. From the sole of the foot even to the head, There is no soundness in it, But wounds and bruises and putrefying sores; They have not been closed or bound up, Or soothed with ointment” (Isaiah 1:5-6). America, Great Britain and other English-speaking peoples are morally and spiritually sick, from head to toe. The disease will kill us if we don’t cut it out and beg the pardon of the God of Abraham.

This remarkable passage gives us insight into why our social and moral problems never see a solution. God has stopped hearing the prayers. Right here is a warning to our religious audience who think the religious base of the nation will still see a rising to restore the moral underpinnings of the nation. They can’t. The religious leaders themselves are the blind leading the blind. They have forsaken the law and the way of God at its core. They may wear a shroud of righteousness but God does not hear them as well. Do not look to the conservative evangelical wing of the country to produce a solution. It will not happen.

Turn again to your Bible and read what God says. Apply it personally, recognizing this is what God requires. It is what you can and what you should do. Change yourself before God. Then, you will be ready to face the monumental challenges before us. God finishes this passage in Isaiah with a direct challenge.

“Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow. ‘Come now, and let us reason together,’ Says the LORD, ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword’; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken” (Isaiah 1:16-20).

Beyond Today is on a multi-city United States tour called “America: The Time is Now.” At the heart of our message is the question we ask here, can America be great again? The answer is yes, it can. It is not too late for a national repentance that acknowledges God. God made a promise to the Israel of old and it applies today. If, in a time of national distress and trial, the people could find their way back to the right paths and ways, God could hear and help. He said, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

We believe the answer to the problems that concern us all lies in obedience to God and the individual understanding of the purpose of life. Any revival, any change, any effort to restore security and hope for the future, must begin at the level of the individual. We are taking that message across the country and we invite you to come and to engage with us and this message and find out more. The return to the greatness of America can begin right now with you.

[Darris] We’re now joined by fellow Beyond Today presenters Gary Petty and Steve Myers to further discuss the topic: “Will America Be Great Again?”

It’s no question that America has been a very powerful influence on the world scene. Is that going to continue?

[Steve] Well it won’t continue, not unless we change our ways. When you look to the Word of God it’s pretty clear the Psalms says, “blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12). God is not our Lord in this country anymore. And when we make other choices, how can we return to greatness unless we recognize the true God?

[Gary] You know, the United States has been a product of both good and bad on the world scene. But, the good came from because we are people who believed in this book.

[Darris] There was an acceptance of the basic tenants of this book.

[Gary] Yes, and as we give up this book, our ability to be a good influence on the world is going to disappear.

[Darris] Why would we say, as I did today in this program, that the ultimate solution is not in the realm of politics which so rapidly consumes us in this country?

[Steve] Well, often times, we think our leadership, our human leadership, holds all the keys to our success, but over and over again the Word of God points out very clearly it’s not even within us as human beings to direct our own steps. So unless we seek God, seek His will and His direction in our life, we’re going to be going off on the wrong path.

[Gary] If there is a God and He created us, He has a reason for us, a purpose for us. We believe that. We know that. We see that. As the leaders of this nation or any leader of any nation does not recognize that God and follow that God, He is not going to direct where they go. And as human beings we will always eventually fail. Without God, we’ll fail. So, as this country becomes less and less of a Christian nation, it’s going to be less and less of an opportunity or the ability to do good and our leaders are going to have to change, and the nation—would the nation even follow a true Christian leader?

[Darris] Well, just follow that up for a moment, we see this attempt to mix politics and religion in America. It’s been going on for several decades and still is a part of the mix. Why can’t those two get together and create a solution?

[Gary] Because they’re not compatible. There’s God’s viewpoint and there’s humanity. And you had even mentioned there in Jeremiah where it talks about how we’re desperately wicked. We have to come to grips with: only God knows how this works. So until we’re willing to submit to Him, the human element has to be given to God.

[Steve] It seems like the whole lesson, at least one of the major lessons from the Old Testament was that very thing. When you choose your own ways, you want to mix it up with what God says, it doesn’t work. It just doesn’t work. You do things God’s way because it is the best way.

[Darris] From a religious point of view.

[Steve] From a—from any point of view, really! If you want success, God says choose life. Choose His way. He knows us. He created us. He knows everything about us. He knows the best way.

[Darris] So, if someone listening to us today finally comes to a point, well then, if there’s no answer in politics, what can I do? What should they do?

[Gary] Here’s the thing. Religious freedom is part of this country, so we can’t go around enforcing…

[Darris] No…

[Gary] …a religion on people. So we have to accept where the society is going, but each of us individually can make a choice to follow God, and when we do, we can become a positive instrument of change in His hands. So we have—we can’t look at well, I’m going to force my religion on others. We have to say, no, I’m going to turn to God and let Him be involved in my life.

[Steve] We have got to be that committee of one that chooses God’s way. He tells us in Deuteronomy, choose life. Make that choice. Start it in your own life. Recognize where you’re at and make those positive, right, godly choices and that will start that process with you.

[Darris] Even if a national revival doesn’t take place, it can begin with the individual.

[Gary] That’s right.

We are in a grave moment in the world. Something is happening in America; people are worried the nation is nearing the point of no return. What is happening, and what does it mean? And what can you do?

I have on my desk a copy of Andrew Roberts’ A History of the English-Speaking Peoples Since 1900. The 2008 book shows the positive impact of America and Great Britain and others in the world since the turn of the 20th century. From the defeat of communism and Nazi aggression to the invention of vaccines and new crop strains that saved millions of lives, the story is one of the most remarkable in history.

The author states at the book’s conclusion that the English-speaking nations are “the last, best hope for mankind.” He goes on to say that, according to the lessons of history, the time of dominance of these peoples will fade and other powers like China or one yet to appear will rise and exert a “global sway.”

A growing segment of Americans are concerned about the direction of the nation on many fronts. Fear and anger are working at many levels.

Roberts concludes with a note of prophetic inevitability in saying that when the time of the English-speaking peoples fades, “the human race will come to mourn the passing of this most decent, honest, generous, fair-minded and self-sacrificing imperium” (pp. 647-648).

What is happening and why?

Many voices today are saying America is near the point of no return. For months candidates for the American presidency have stood on a national stage shouting “America is losing!” and lamenting the nation’s ever-growing list of problems.

These statements have found a big audience. People know something is wrong. Has the nation, which for so long has solved one problem after another, reached the limit of its power and ability?

A growing segment of Americans are concerned about the direction of the nation on many fronts. Fear and anger are working at many levels. This entire election cycle has been turned upside down. Conventional leadership based on character and integrity seems lost and hard to discern within the messages. Visionary leaders able to rally the nation behind clearly stated goals are not on the stage.

All this reflects significantly deeper problems of a spiritual nature. By virtue of America’s historic and prophetic world role, this then becomes a larger problem for the entire globe.

A world changing before our eyes

Let’s step back and look at a few trouble spots in the world. Let’s examine what expert observers say about America’s relationship with the nations. It can give context to any discussion about America’s place in the world.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 the United States has been the world’s sole superpower. Its military and economy are the biggest and strongest in the world. America led two coalitions into the Middle East to deal with anarchy and to attempt to instill democracy in nations like Iraq and Afghanistan. America’s men and women bled and died in places like Fallujah, fighting to give a better life to the people there.

In 2011 the last American combat troops withdrew from Iraq.  Then came ISIS or the Islamic State, the largest terrorist force in modern history, taking over large swaths of Iraq and Syria and proclaiming itself a new Islamic caliphate. ISIS has been able to extend its terror attacks to Paris and San Bernardino, California.

Syria has been embroiled in five years of civil war, ever since it was caught up in the toppling of Arab governments in the so-called “Arab Spring.” Now, facing ISIS and other Islamist forces, Syria is virtually a failed state, its government propped up by military forces from Russia, Iran and Lebanon. A massive humanitarian crisis has led to more than 4 million people leaving Syria, with about 1 million Syrians flooding into Europe. The waves of immigrants threaten to upend an already fragile European Union.

Europe has been dramatically altered by the flood of migrants crossing the Mediterranean. Germany has brought in nearly one million immigrants from Syria and other countries. Settling them into the orderly German society is leading to major social chaos.

Bible prophecy and history show the relentless opposition of powerful spiritual forces against God’s purposes. We’re seeing this play out in today’s headlines. It’s time you understand the true meaning behind the events making news today!

The migrant crisis comes on the heels of several years of economic uncertainty in the European Union, testing the limits of this diverse union of peoples. The multifaceted Middle East problem has become a European problem. And that was before the November 2015 attacks in Paris by Islamic fundamentalists.

Former United States diplomat Dennis Ross has observed that the vacuum in Syria was part of a greater American retreat in the Middle East, one which “has helped to produce the increasing competition between Iran and Saudi Arabia” (“How Obama Created a Middle East Vacuum,” Politico.com, Jan. 10, 2016).

Geopolitical analyst Robert Kagan, writing in The Wall Street Journal, said: “The horrific attacks in Paris, likely organized and directed by Islamic State from its base in Syria, and the prospect of more such attacks, threaten the cohesion of Europe, and with it the cohesion of the Trans-Atlantic community, or what used to be known as the West. The crisis on the periphery, in short, has now spilled over into the core” (“The Crisis of World Order,” Nov. 20, 2015).

Loss of the “special relationship”

Compounding this grave problem in Europe is the loss of what was long known as the “special relationship” between Britain and the United States. The longtime allies fought together in two world wars, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and defended Europe from a potential Soviet invasion. Their ties run very deep. Yet now that relationship is unraveling.

The special relationship between the leaders of the English-speaking world has deteriorated in the last decade. This does not bode well for the rest of the world. In a few months Britons will vote on whether to remain in the EU. Britain used to be a bridge to other European powers along which the United States could easily navigate to maintain order and peace in a historically war-torn region. That has changed. Many perceive that America cares little for Europe’s problems. This is a dangerous world situation.

Kagan further highlights the problem with Europe, America and other Western nations when it comes to threats from other nations and powers that desire to push their religious or ideological agenda. Western liberal nations, bred on Enlightenment values of the perfectibility of mankind, assume that diplomacy, reason and education can chase away the dark demons of war, conflict and repression. This is a noble thought, but one completely at odds with the record of history.

What does it mean?

War, genocide and the inhumane acts of evil repeatedly rise to plague our world. This confirms the biblical teaching that human nature apart from the transforming Spirit of God is “deceitful above all things and desperately wicked” (Jeremiah 17:9).

Jesus Christ warned that war and the ever-present threat of conflict would be a feature of life right up until His return to establish God’s Kingdom on the earth. But today’s world leaders do not factor this biblical worldview into their international relations strategies.

Bible prophecy and history show the relentless opposition of powerful spiritual forces against God’s purposes. History is a record of God fulfilling His purposes among the nations—but also of Satan using the nations to advance his own plans to oppose God at every turn. We’re seeing this play out in today’s headlines. It’s time you understand the true meaning behind the events making news today!

America should take the motto “In God we trust” seriously and look to God’s Word to understand its problems.

Kagan references a piercing 2002 observation from the British statesman Robert Cooper: “‘The challenge to the postmodern world,’ the diplomat Robert Cooper argued, was that while Europeans might operate within their borders as if power no longer mattered, in the world outside Europe, they needed to be prepared to use force just as in earlier eras.

“‘Among ourselves, we keep the law, but when we are operating in the jungle, we must also use the laws of the jungle,’ he wrote.” Kagan observes that Europeans “failed to arm themselves for the jungle, materially and spiritually, and now that the jungle has entered the European garden, they are at a loss” (ibid.).

Spiritual warfare behind the scenes

Without knowing it, Kagan describes what the apostle Paul describes as the real, behind-the-scenes spiritual battle “against forces and authorities and against rulers of darkness and powers in the spiritual world” (Ephesians 6:12, Contemporary English Version).

America may have armed itself materially, but it has woefully failed to arm itself spiritually. America is spiritually and morally blind because of its national sins. Because of this it has also entered this “jungle” without the guiding hand of God.

“Exhibit A” in foreign policy may well prove to be the recent agreement with Iran to lift sanctions in return for Iranian assurances that it will terminate its program to develop nuclear weapons. This will likely prove to be a strategic miscalculation. Iran is the world’s largest supporter of major terrorist groups in the region. Their stated purpose is to destroy the state of Israel. Those who have supported Israel, namely the United States, are targets of the same threat.

America’s handling of a nuclear arms treaty with Iran has alienated key regional allies and cast doubt on America’s commitment to their interests. In a world of such destructive power coming into the hands of forces whose avowed purpose is death to entire nations such as Israel, this becomes a matter of survival in a very bad neighborhood.

Shaping up for the world’s final battles

Iran occupies the lands of the ancient Persian Empire. Under two kings, Darius and Xerxes, Persia sought to extend its power beyond Asia. It launched two invasions of Europe. The armies of Greece repulsed both attacks. More than a hundred years later, under Alexander the Great, the Greeks countered with an invasion, completely taking over the Persian Empire. Again, history and Bible prophecy show us where the final battles of the world will arise.

Modern versions of these ancient empires will figure in rising power blocs that will bring about a world crisis greater than any in the past. Armies from Europe and the Middle East will lead in this. Daniel 11:40 speaks of the leader of a European-based power called “the king of the North” responding to a “push” or attack by a figure called “the king of the South”—a person yet to arise out of the fractious, explosive Middle East.

The subsequent conflict will eventually lead to the final chapter to many previous clashes, what the biblical book of Revelation calls “the battle of that great day of God almighty” (Revelation 16:14).

Are we watching the buildup to these events today? We need to understand the connection to the headlines of today and what Bible prophecy foretells. America’s withdrawal from its historic position of maintaining world order is setting the world up for these events.

Prior to America it was Britain that extended order to the modern world both in Europe and in other regions through its empire. That was eclipsed long ago. Now, as America’s stabilizing influence is withdrawn, the world is shaping up to be very different. That is what America’s decline in greatness and influence means.

Turning things around—facing up to fears

So let’s return to the question of whether America will ever be great again. The answer to this question is spiritual. It will require us to examine the bigger question of what has made America—and for that matter Britain, Canada, Australia and all the English-speaking peoples of the world—great.

The answer is not what many would expect. The answer will not be found in any political candidate or party now or in the future. The answer is only to be found in each of us turning to God in deep, heartfelt repentance.

It should be recognized that fear is driving much of the public discussion in not only America but other parts of the world. People fear Islamic terrorist attacks coming to the nearest shopping mall or large sports event. People fear recession, losing their jobs and their savings, and economic collapse. People fear that their world is threatened and the future is uncertain.

They look to politicians to provide policies of hope. They put their faith in political leaders only to be bitterly disappointed when the result is just more of the same—or worse.

This is what is happening with the current election cycle in America. “America doesn’t win any more,” cried out one candidate. “If I am elected we will win so much you’ll get tired of winning!” Other candidates promise to return America to the front lines of a world role to restore order. Still others promise to take the nation deeper into debt through massive social programs and taxation.

The heart of the problem

For generations America has placed on its currency the motto, “In God we trust.” Now is the time for us take that motto seriously and look to God’s Word to understand how America could get itself out of the problems it faces.

One of the key biblical passages to examine is found in the book of Isaiah. God sent this prophet to another nation who once trusted but then rejected Him. Israel’s spiritual condition mirrors ours today. The message of Isaiah fits us exactly.

Notice how the prophet begins in the first chapter: “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth! For the Lord has spoken: ‘I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against Me; the ox knows its owner and the donkey its master’s crib; but Israel does not know, My people do not consider’” (Isaiah 1:2-3)

God says a people who once knew and acknowledged Him had forgotten what He previously did for them and turned their backs and ignored plain teaching and warning directing them to return to Him.

Open your Bible and read what God says. Apply it personally, recognizing this is what God requires of you. It is what you can and must do. Take steps to change yourself before God. Then you will be ready to face the monumental challenges before us.

America and the English-speaking nations have forgotten who made them great. These nations created the greatest expansion of wealth in the history of the world. But how? Because the God of Abraham was faithful in His promise to bless that patriarch’s descendants in the modern age. Yes, America and Britain are the foremost nations among them. Sadly, we don’t know this—as Isaiah said, we “do not consider.” Because we do not know this, we have turned to false religion and moral sin.

A nation like America cannot be replicated in this world. If it could, it would’ve already happened through all the foreign aid, intervention and nation-building. There is only one America. God placed this land and its people here for a divine purpose. It has grown large and great and free because the God of heaven made a promise to a man named Abraham. God has fulfilled that promise in history, and because He has, He will fulfill the spiritual promise of the offer of eternal salvation to all peoples.

The only path back to God

The unraveling of America’s time of greatness is a moment of opportunity to acknowledge God and turn to Him with a changed heart. Now is a time to understand that America can only return to greatness through the path of national repentance on the order of that called for by the prophet Isaiah, as he next states:

Alas, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a brood of evildoers, children who are corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked to anger the Holy One of Israel, they have turned away backward” (Isaiah 1:4).

“Sin” and “sinful” are not popular words. The modern mind does not want to consider that sin, the breaking of God’s law, could be the cause of so many problems. Sin is a huge problem, but it is a word that has all but disappeared from our common vocabulary. We cover up great moral problems devastating families and society by using language that softens and hides the impact of personal sin.

Continuing in Isaiah, the next passage shouts louder than almost any other Bible passage to describe the condition of a nation that has known the greatness of America but turned its back on its heritage and its God. He cries out to us today:

“Why should you be stricken again? You will revolt more and more. The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faints. From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it, but wounds and bruises and putrefying sores; they have not been closed or bound up, or soothed with ointment” (Isaiah 1:5-6).

America, Great Britain and other English-speaking peoples are morally and spiritually sick from head to toe. The disease will kill us if we don’t cut it out and beg the mercy of the God of Abraham.

Can a religious reawakening happen?

God goes on in Isaiah 1 to describe how He hates our outward form of religion while we continue in our evil ways. This troubles and wearies Him to the point that He hides His eyes and turns His ear from hearing our prayers (Isaiah 1:13-15). This remarkable passage gives us insight into why our social and moral problems never see a solution—God has stopped hearing our prayers.

Right here is a warning to our religious audience who think the religious base of the nation will rise up to restore the moral underpinnings of the nation. They can’t. The religious leaders themselves are the blind leading the blind. They have forsaken the law and way of God at its core. They may wear a shroud of righteousness, but God doesn’t hear them either. Do not look to the conservative evangelical wing of the country to produce a solution. It will not happen.

Turn instead to your Bible and read what God says. Apply it personally, recognizing this is what God requires of you. It is what you can and must do. Take steps to change yourself before God. Then you will be ready to face the monumental challenges before us.

God finishes this passage in Isaiah with a direct challenge to those who have a heart to hear: “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, rebuke the oppressor; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow.

“‘Come now, and let us reason together,’ says the Lord, ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword’; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken” (Isaiah 1:16-20).

Will America be great again?

Beyond Today is on a multi-city United States tour called America: The Time Is Now! At the heart of our message is the question we ask here: Can America be great again? The answer is, yes it can. It’s not too late for a national repentance that acknowledges and seeks God.

God made a promise to the nation of Israel of old that applies today. If in a time of national distress and trial the people could find their way back to the right paths and ways, God would hear and help. He said, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

The answer to the problems that concern us all lies in obedience to God and understanding God’s purpose for your life. Any revival, any change and effort to restore security and hope for the future, must begin at the personal and individual level. We’re taking that message to the public arena and invite you to come and engage with this message and find out more.

The return to greatness of America can begin now with you! Will you have a heart to hear and respond?

Transcript

[Darris McNeely] Welcome back to Inside United Podcasts. I’m Darris McNeely, I’ll be hosting today’s program. And in the studio with me today is my fellow co-host on Beyond Today, Steve Myers.

[Steve Myers] Good to be here.

[Darris] Good to have you, Steve. We wanted to talk a little bit about the Beyond Today personal appearance campaigns that kicked off last fall when we made our tour down to Texas and have now restarted. We were in Nashville, Tennessee, about a month ago, and we’re going to – this weekend, as we’re talking here right now, we’re heading out to Indianapolis, and then Columbus and a number of other sites. So, a lot of people have been asking and looking at these on the web. We’ve had people sign up for them, we’ve had a great deal of interest, members and subscribers to Beyond Today Magazine. Maybe you could give a little bit of a background as to why we’re doing this, and the goals and the purposes of these personal appearance campaigns from your perspective.

[Steve] There’s really a lot to it, I think, in a number of ways. When you think about being on the program – you know, you talk to a camera. You’re not talking to people. And so, one of the wonderful opportunities with the personal appearance campaign is you get to see people face-to-face. We talk to our viewers, we talk to the people that we write to with Beyond Today Magazine, and so you have a real interaction with people that are listening to the program, that are reading the articles. And so that’s something that I think brings it to another level, when you can see each other and talk about it. And then you talk about the importance of what the message is about. And I think that is so critical. You know, why do we do these things? Well, in one way, we’re like the apostle Paul – woe to us if we don’t preach this gospel.

[Darris] Yeah.

[Steve] Because it is an amazing message of God and it is about, you know, changed lives and what God’s purpose is all about, and how do you face the difficulties in this world? I mean, part of the program deals with that – that we live in a world that is in a mess, and if you don’t have an understanding of what God is doing, what is His purpose, on the world scale as well as an individual scale – yeah, how do you face things? You know, what is the purpose? And so to deal with those, you know, huge issues of why do I exist and what is God’s plan, it does give a hope and certainly a purpose for people’s lives right now. And I think that is something that is exciting to see, especially face-to-face and person-to-person, that you can’t really get unless you’re right there with each other. And so it’s a neat opportunity.

[Darris] You know, several months ago, when we were beginning to draw a concept of this personal appearance campaign, we wanted to go out and take the message and Beyond Today to these places. We wanted to get something that was attention-grabbing, and spoke really to issues of the day, which is why we chose “America: The Time Is Now!”.  “The Time Is Now” really is a call to repentance. It’s a call to understanding your purpose in your life. It’s a call to change. I think we all know that America has gone through a number of years of cultural, political, and social changes and turmoil, and we’re in the midst of an election cycle right now which has generated a great deal of interest and even in some cases fear for people, and America’s role is changing in the world. And we constantly deal with these topics on our programming and in the magazine, and so we wanted to take this down to the personal level, but beyond just a message about prophecy. It’s a message about what’s the purpose of your life and what you need to do to help yourself to understand why the world is the way that it is.

[Steve] Mm-hm. Beyond Today Live – I really believe that it does focus that message on our overall purpose as individuals, our relationship with God. It focuses on how do you handle the difficulties in this world – I mean, like you said, the political season that we’re in right now, you don’t think we have problems? Just turn on the news. Just watch the candidates. Listen to the rhetoric. We are in trouble. You know, America is in trouble, and the time is now, you know, to really think about what is this all about? And there’s so many confusing messages out there today that the message of the Bible, the message that we’re bringing to people through the word of God is one that gives, you know, help for today, hope for tomorrow – you know, it’s our tagline.

[Darris] Yes.

[Steve] But it’s a reality.

[Darris] It is.

[Steve] It’s a reality of what it’s about. And God has so much more in mind than this mess of a world that’s out there. So when you look at your life that oftentimes may look like a mess, this world looks like a mess, it’s almost overwhelming. But yet with the word that we’re bringing from the truth of God, you know – sets a whole different tone and a whole different purpose for each and every one of us.

[Darris] Yeah, we deliberately chose a positive approach. “America: The Time Is Now!” is attention-getting, but the message that people hear and what we provide for them really gets down to, here’s what you can do in your life, and here’s how you can have hope that there is a God, that He’s in charge of history, He is bringing this world to the fruition of His purpose and plan for mankind. Here’s your role, here’s what you can do, here’s what you should do.

[Steve] Yeah, I think that’s one of the really neat things about the message that we bring. And it’s not our message, it’s God’s message. But the fact that – yeah, look at the big picture – we can frame the big picture by the word of God. We can also frame our individual lives by the word of God. And so it’s not just an ethereal kind of thing like, wouldn’t this be nice, but that we really bring a message that really gets down to the practical things for your life and what do you need to do in order to have a part of this whole thing. And so it’s exciting, it’s fun, it’s one of those things that, it really is a game-changer if you really take this message to heart. I think that’s the amazing thing, is to see lives can change and they do change because of this very message.

[Darris] Well, these personal appearance campaigns, “America: The Time is Now!”, Beyond Today Live, are scheduled for a number of cities here in the Midwest in the coming months. We’re going this weekend to Indianapolis, and next month we’ll be in Columbus, Ohio. And then this summer, we will be in Chicago, Milwaukee, Dayton, Ohio, Cleveland, Ohio, and then in the fall, I know we’re lined up to go down to hit three cities in North Carolina – Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte, North Carolina. We have other cities on the block that we want to go to as well, so we’re planning to roll these out and continue on into the future, and we hope to see many of you with us, and we hope that you’ll come out and meet Gary and Steve and I and others of our Beyond Today production staff, as well as other people who actually do read, understand, and are acting upon the message of Beyond Today that they either read or see on television or the web. So Steve, appreciate you being here, coming in and talking about it for a few minutes and bringing the folks that listen to the podcast here up-to-date on that. So thanks very much. This is Inside United, thanks for listening, and be sure and tune in for the next edition.
